Genie develops rental handlers

Genie Industries in Europe is developing ‘SX’ rental–friendly versions of several of its telehandler, with the first available being the GTX 4013 SX

Laurent Pons, Genie's European telehandler sales coordinator, told AI that the SX versions are simpler to own and less expensive to buy. They will have hydraulic controls, fewer electronic controls (machine–integrated personnel baskets cannot be used), and without accessories such as a hydraulic line up the boom for the quick change coupler

“We are going to have more SX models to offer a full range to our rental customers”, says Mr Pons. The price will be between 5% and 10% lower; “more 10% than 5%”, he says. The 4013, which replaced the 3713 model, will also form the basis for other updated Genie handlers, with new features including an redesigned cab and a curved upper boom section (see photo) that improves the operator's view and reduces the number of weldings (strengthening the handler for bucket duties)

Jim Otley, managing director for Genie in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, says Genie's goal is to reach a 10% share of the total 25–30000 unit European handler market (construction and agriculture). Current market share is very modest, acknowledges Mr Otley; “I think we can get to 10% by the end of 2008.”

Meanwhile, Genie Industries in North America says it is now offering a new 1–3–5 standard warranty on all Genie handlers. The warranty – which applies to machines ordered in North America after 1 October 2006 – covers electrical components for one year, hydraulic components for three and structural components for five.
