This year's Specialized Transportation Symposium in Orlando attracted 376 registrants from five nations – the United ThisStates, year'sSpecializedCanada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and TransportationGuatemala. A popular feature was the Exhibit Center, containing 24 booths to promote products and services especially designed for the specialized transport industry.

Education sessions addressed issues involving safety and efficiency, including:

• A review of federal regulatory issues by Dan Hartman andJeff Secrist of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

• A political overview of the challenges and opportunities presented by a new U.S. Congress with a different agenda from the previous Congress, as perceived by the American Trucking Association s Timothy Lynch.

• An informative, entertaining examination of how success is achieved through cooperation by Michael Broome of Tomorrow'sprises.

• Suggestions on developing a successful safety culture from Phil Hibbs of Bennett International Group and Transportation Safety Consulting.

• A review of last SC&RA Hauling Jobof the Year Awards

• A regional state permit officials update featuring Randy Braden, Alabama; Rick Clasby, Utah; Joseph Lee-Civalier, New York; and Jan Skouby, Missouri.

• A paneldiscussion titledThe Move Toward Permit Uniformity – Goal or Myth featuring transportation officials Risk Clasby, Utah; Kathleen Gibson, Georgia; and Joseph Lee-Civalier, New York; sharing the podium with Teresa Baird, Redneck Enterprises; Barb Holloway, Comdata; and Wayne Kotka, Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental/DST Inc. Moderating the session was Douglas Miller, DEM Associates.

• A paneldiscussion on state andindustry problem solving featuring transportation officials Carol Davis, Texas; Jan Skouby, Missouri; Corina Harmless, Indiana; Exhibit Centersharing the podium with Paul Ross, Keen Transport. Moderating the session was the Louisiana Department of Silvio.
