While the structural and mechanical condition of a used crane is paramount, its appearance is a key factor in its resale value, according to Dakota AG Innovations in the US, which produces Dakota Shine, a product that restores the colour and patina of oxidized paintwork. Eric Christensen, Dakota director, finance and operations, explains that when the product is used, “Auction companies, equipment dealers and rental companies have reported that they receive 15 to 20% in additional sales revenue.” Christensen says Dakota Shine is environmentally sound and produced mainly from agricultural by products.

As an alternative to wet sanding and waxing the product is applied in two stages. The ready-mixed liquid is applied in a single coat to painted surfaces that have been prepared with the companion product, Dakota Prep, and, where necessary, spot painted and allowed to become tacky. Drying time is 15 to 20 minutes and curing time (before waxing or pressure washing) is 15 to 30 days. The liquid, which can also be used on vinyl lettering and decals, is supplied either in aerosol cans or in containers for use with conventional paint spray guns.
